ESPN The Body Issue 2010 (October 18, 2010)
This is the Second Annual ESPN Body Issue. Unlike the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, this is not a skin mag full of sexually provocative and heavily airbrushed pictures of models. ESPN has started its own tradition, one that is actually related to athletics, and presents a more realistic view of the appearance of the human body. The Body Issue contains pictures of male and female athletes, of various ages, races, shapes and sizes. The athletes are in the nude, with their breasts and genitals covered by strategically placed body parts or objects. The athletes are not spread eagle with a come hither look in their eyes. Rather, the pictures show just how amazing and powerful the human body is. Whether you support the trend in gender equality this magazine provides, think the human body is magnificent, appreciate realistic portrayals of appearance, or whether you are just curious to see what NBA players, NFL players, and Olympians look like naked, I suggest you pick up a copy.

Time (August 9, 2010)
This controversial cover shows an 18 year-old Afghan woman who was court-ordered under Taliban rule to have her ears and nose cut off. The reason for the order: She had the courage to escape a deadly situation, severe abuse at the hands of the man she was forced to marry and his family. The accompanying article discusses the Taliban's abuse and oppression of women, the positive changes in the lives of females since the U.S. has occupied Afghanistan, and the expected reversion to abuse and oppression if the U.S. steps out now. There is disagreement regarding whether the situation for Afghan women has actually improved and feelings that continued war isn't the answer. Regardless, it is important to be aware of the severe abuse and oppression of Afghan women and do what we can to help them.

The Atlantic (July/August 2010)

In her 12-page cover story, Hanna Rosen paints a positive picture of the current status of women and makes a convincing argument that women are not only gaining equality, but are headed all the way to the top. In this issue, you'll also find an article about misconceptions of gender and parenting. The Atlantic is a great read, especially for the intellectually curious reader. You can find this magazine at Borders or Barnes and Noble.

Magazine of the Month--Vanity Fair (June 2010)
The June 2010 issue of Vanity Fair features pictures of sexy shirtless soccer players. Ladies, if you agree that too many magazine covers feature bikini clad women and too few feature mankini clad men, show your support by purchasing this issue. I recently got a one year subscription to Vanity Fair for only $12 on the Vanity Fair website. What drew me to this magazine is its tendancy to portray women and men in a similiar fashion: there are nearly as many sexy pictures of men as of women! In addition to outstanding photograhy, Vanity Fair contains excellant articles about global issues, economics, travel, beauty, fashion, and entertainment.
